About SEER
SEER, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is one of the most important metrics you can use to analyze the value and performance of an air conditioning system, just as AFUE can be used to assess the efficiency of a gas furnace. SEER is calculated by accounting for the total cooling output of a system divided by the total energy (electricity) input during that season. Most HVAC systems have SEER ratings from 13 to 21, which 21 offering the highest energy efficiency and Energy Star qualifications starting at 14.5

While a higher SEER rating is important, it’s equally important to keep in mind that a lower SEER rating doesn’t automatically make a lower quality unit. In fact, depending on where you live in the country and the size of your home, a 14 SEER multiposition electric heat A/C package system might be just the thing you need.  Remember, the higher the SEER rating, the higher the cost of the system - if you don’t run your system frequently, a lower SEER rating may be more valuable to you.
